Margate - Kent, London's Traditional Seaside Resort

For at least 250 years, the London resident who wished to go to the seashore for a holiday has chosen Margate, Kent as their preferred destination. Margate on the southeast coast of England has a long tradition closely tied to the sea and maritime pursuits.

Margate's wide sand beaches have drawn visitors and tourists to enjoy the sand, sea and sunshine. These beaches have provided the visitors, which in turn have spurred the commercial development of the area. The shore is lined with arcades and amusement parks, including Dreamland, which is bidding for inclusion as a heritage amusement park site. The Dreamland Trust group has plans to restore the oldest wooden roller coaster in the UK, The Scenic Railway, which is already, Grade II listed. In anticipation of the renovation of Dreamland, classic rides have already been obtained from Southport and are in the process of being refurbished and restored.

The Turner Contemporary is an art gallery that is under construction in Margate and completion of this gallery is projected for December of 2010. The completion of this gallery will diversify the people traveling to Margate and open Margate to those who desire something other than a day of sun and sand at the beaches.

Margate offers two historical theaters. The Theatre Royal which is the second oldest theatre in the UK and the Tom Thumb Theater, which is the second smallest theater in the UK as, is evidenced by its name. The Theater Royal was remodeled in 1879 and its exterior largely dates from the 19th century. This theater plays host to a jazz festival that occurs in July of every year, bringing top Jazz talent to the area.

Margate is blesses with fine beaches and a long tradition of being a each and bathing spot. Even with the ability of today's transportation system taking those who wish to holiday to far flung locales, Margate remains a favorite for a holiday at the shore.
